Walmart made a mistake and apparently opened up pre-orders for the SNES Classic Edition last Friday a bit early. A bunch of people who pre-ordered the micro-console from Walmart received notices stating that their pre-order had been cancelled.
The Reasons I’m Broke posted up the actual message they received from Walmart relating to the cancellation of the pre-order. The message can be read on Twitter.
#SNESClassic cancelled.
More reasons I can’t stand online shopping.
Or #Walmart.
Or #Nintendo‘s distribution.

If you’re unable to read the message, it states…
“Thank you for your interest in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System – Classic Edition. As you are aware, this is a highly sought after console that will launch later this fall.
“Unfortunately, due to a technical glitch, the Super Nintendo Classic Edition was mistakenly made available last Friday evening ahead of the official release date. We, regrettably, will have to cancel this item on your order. We know that this is incredibly disappointing to you, and we’re truly sorry for this mistake.”
The mass cancellations caused the SNES Classic Edition to trend on Twitter recently after the news was verified that Walmart was indeed canceling the pre-orders… for now.
Nintendo reaffirmed that the SNES Classic Edition is not due for release until September, and that it won’t be available ahead of time.
A lot of people were curious why exactly they wouldn’t allow for early pre-orders to be made ahead of time? This would prevent the inevitable stock shortage that Nintendo encountered with the NES Classic Edition, and massive shortages they encountered with the Nintendo Switch, which still hasn’t been able to meet demand since March.
There’s no word right now on when pre-orders will open up again, but it would have been wise to use Walmart’s early pre-order data to adjust production queues for distribution of the SNES Classic Edition. This way Nintendo won’t have to worry about stock shortages or not having enough units to go around when it inevitably launches this September.
