The official release date was finally revealed for God of War, the upcoming sequel that also sort of reboots the franchise for the PlayStation 4. The game is scheduled to launch this spring on April 20th for Sony’s eighth gen home console.
The news was confirmed with a post over on the PlayStation Blog, where creative director at Sony Santa Monica Studios, Cory Barlog, laid out a brand new trailer and the release date details for the Sony fan base.
The story trailer focuses on the adventure that Kratos and his puny little son are going on while facing off against Norse gods.
The story seems a bit more clear cut, as Kratos and the boy venture to the highest peaks to take the boy’s mother’s ashes there, as part of her dying wish.
Along the way Kratos and the boy bond and we also learn that the boy isn’t going to grow up to be soy-laden… he’s got the blood of an alpha in him.
There are some fairly grand moments on display in the trailer, including a sequence where the boy asks Kratos “Can you kill something THAT big?” … I was waiting for Kratos to say… “I’ve killed bigger”.
There are a bunch of “I want to win an award” moments sprinkled throughout the trailer. The story seems okay, but it’s pretty obvious Barlog and crew really want the 2018 GOTY. They’ll likely have to compete for it with The Last of Us 2 or Red Dead Redemption 2. That’s even assumign that God of War is half as good as the press and the developers seem to think their game is.
The trailer also manages to avoid showcasing any of the gameplay, which is kind of scary for a game that made its name to fame based on its gameplay. What people have seen of it so far have left them rather unimpressed, but we’ll see if that all changes when April 20th rolls around.
At the end of the day, you can look for the hack-and-slash adventure game (completely devoid of nudity or sexualized females) to launch on the PS4 starting April 20th.
