Compile Heart just recently came off the success of Death end re;Quest releasing on Steam this past May after the game had released for the PS4. Death end Re;Quest was a notable release because it came out unscathed by censorship, and now Compile Heart will be diving back into the franchise with Death end re;Quest 2… except it’s coming out for the PS4.
RPG Site is reporting that Compile Heart has announced a sequel for the game, spilling the first bit of details to Famitsu Magazine.
It’s being reported that the game’s scenario and story will be helmed once more by Makoto Kedouin, and that the character designs will be tackled by Kei Nanameda.
What’s interesting is that whichever way the story goes in Death end re;Quest 2 it’s noted that you won’t have to play the first game to understand what’s going on with the second game’s story.
In fact, according to Gematsu, the sequel will take place in the real-world that was depicted in the first game. It will be themed around three girls living in a dormitory. It’s explained that the three girls and the voice actresses are Mai Touyama (voiced by Chiwa Saitou), Rotten Dollheart (voiced by Madoka Asahina), and Liliana Piata (voiced by Manaka Iwami).
The story will focus on the girls investigating kids at the boarding school going missing, while they explore conspiracies and the presence of the occult in the fictional town of Liz Soara.
Unlike the first game, there will be a higher focus on horror in the sequel, and realism will play a much stronger role in how events unfold this time around, which may or may not entice fans of the first game back into the fold. We still don’t know what the release window will be or what the price of the sequel will be, but those details will likely arrive soon. The concept of the game certainly sounds different, but also seems like a steep departure from the original Death end re;Quest.
Nevertheless, in the meantime if you do want to catch up on the first game’s story, you can do so by picking up a digital copy from over on the Steam store, where it’s currently available for $49.99.
Let’s hope that the sequel isn’t hampered too badly by Sony’s censorship policies, or at the very least Compile Heart releases a fully uncensored version on Steam or Nintendo Switch further down the road.
