DC Universe dropped the full red band trailer for the upcoming Harley Quinn series set to premier on November 29th, 2019 on the DC Universe streaming service, which will also be syndicated on FireTV, Roku, Google Play, the iTunes App Store, and on Xbox.
So what do you get when your main character is an emancipated woman who doesn’t need no man, beats up thugs twice her size, and receives help from a tree hugging Liberal while Aretha Franklin’s “Freedom” blares in the background?
You get a trailer that is 100% feminist fire fuel.
It centers around Harley Quinn becoming a “strong, independent woman” who breaks away from the Joker after he discards her during a fight with Batman. Quinn joins up with what looks like will be her future love interest in Poison Ivy, and the two attempt to join the big boys league called the League of Doom, which features all the top DC villains. Quinn, however, not capable of pulling off top-tier crimes on her own, recruits some D-list villains to her cause as they attempt to wreak havoc throughout Gotham City.
You can check out the red band trailer below, which is chock full of blood, F-bombs, and the recurring theme of “feminist empowerment” .
The only thing that genuinely had me chuckling was Bane’s voice, which is kind of a riff on Tom Hardy’s depiction of the character in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.
The rest of the trailer tried to take a Deadpool-esque approach to the way Harley was portrayed, putting her in ridiculous situations and somehow getting out (presumably by the skin of her teeth and a little help from Ivy).
The series will obviously dabble in TV-MA territory (as forewarned at the start of the trailer) with blood, bone-breaking, and lots of needless ‘F’ bombs to show how edgy they are for the people who pirate the crap that airs on HBO.
Ultimately, it feels like the try-hard series of the season.
As various commenters also pointed out on the YouTube page, it feels like an oversaturation of Harley and Joker… especially Harley.
She’s a sidekick character that’s best used in moderation, and producers and executives at DC recently have gone all-in on trying to make a psychopath some kind of lesbian heroine and icon of feminist empowerment.
It’s like trying to make Scarface the golden standard that immigrants should follow when they get to America.
The problem here, though, is that the entire plot for what gets promoted and what doesn’t is completely gone. It doesn’t look like the series tries to de-escalate Harley from being a psychopath after leaving the Joker, it looks like she stays a psychopath but teams up with and (if the comics are anything to go by) hooks up with Poison Ivy in a relationship.
That’s not to mention that recent incarnations of Ivy has had her foregoing her own hetero ties in favor of chiefly being a lesbian, canon be damned.
I’m over all this woke, female empowerment garbage, but apparently the execs at DC aren’t.
If you haven’t been bludgeoned over the head enough with a deluge of pro-feminist Harley Quinn propaganda, well you’ll get a little bit more of it come November 29th and even more of it when Birds of Prey, also starring Harley Quinn, hits theaters on February 7th, 2020.
