It looks like Phil Spencer and crew are trying to focus on things that might draw the attention of gamers to the green brand. However, Spencer says a lot of things, so there’s that. But, in this case, he believes that nobody really wants VR and that’s why Project Scarlett will focus on other aspects to attract gamers.
While the Xbox Team wants more Japanese and Asian first and third-party games on the forthcoming Project Scarlett, they also want more RPGs than first and third-person shooters.
In addition to those moves, the head of the Xbox brand believes nobody wants VR, and that won’t be the focus of the next-gen Xbox console.
We know the above information due to website stevivor.com. The site notes that back in 2016, Spencer told the site that VR would come to Xbox One X (once known as Project Scorpio) when it didn’t feel like “demos and experiments.”
Fast forward today, and the same website caught up with Spencer and asked him about his past 2016 comment on VR. Here’s what Spencer had to say:
“Yeah, I don’t love my quote there because I’m not trying to demean the work that people are doing in VR. I have some issues with VR — it’s isolating and I think of games as a communal, kind of together experience. We’re responding to what our customers are asking for and… nobody’s asking for VR.”
Spencer continues:
“The vast majority of our customers know if they want a VR experience, there’s places to go get those. We see the volumes of those on PC and other places.”
He, Spencer, ended with the following on VR sales and the potential of the tech evolving:
“Nobody’s selling millions and millions of VR units. I think we might get there [eventually]. But yeah, that’s not where our focus is.”
To summarize all of this, Spencer and crew want to focus on RPGs and other Japanese creators bringing their stuff to the green brand rather than focusing on the big gambit that nobody is asking for, which is VR.
