Hear ye hear ye, gather around for as internet law hath doth declared we must now discuss how adorable baby Yoda…I mean Sonic is. We shall now proceed to be totally into this for about a few weeks. At which time we will only kind of pretend to still be into how adorable it is and then move on before ultimately going to see the movie itself on Valentine’s Day.
Truthfully Baby Sonic is extremely adorable. Bounding with innocence that gives cold blackened hearts a bit of optimism that finally a movie based on a video game might actually be good.
What is missed in the chorus of adoration is just how beautiful and well made Sonic’s home world is. Were the backdrop not so superb it wouldn’t allow for the new model to shine and capture the spotlight. Making it all the bitterer how the employees at Moving Picture Company Vancouver were laid off shortly before Christmas, as reported by Cartoon Brew. Not because the company was not profitable, nor their work as we can now see not being up to standards, but so the execs could move operations to more tax friend areas.
Little else in the trailer is new, but while being a familiar treading it continues to demonstrate a high level of fidelity in the animations. Vehicular destruction demonstrating a high level of detail that otherwise wouldn’t be expected for a movie based on a video game.
Of course there is also the scene that all but guarantees it will be huge in the Chinese box office: Sonic is being chased down while racing full speed ahead across the Great Wall of China with Dr. Robotnic in hot pursuit. Despite the scene being obvious pandering for Chinese dollars, thematically it works.
The Great Wall becoming another track for Sonic to race down is itself visually enticing, but it will be interesting to see if the Great Wall becomes destruction porn in the final version of the movie.
Naturally if you’re going to pander to foreign markets you want to ensure the Japanese fans get their swag, and they do.
A very nice Baby Sonic Keychain will be given out to those that go see the movie presumably in the launch week. It’s not that I’m super envious or cursing the high costs of airfare over a keychain I’ll never use. Certain do not entertain such imaginations.
The fact that this movie has gone from an announcement that elicited nightmares and terrified screams from viewers to trailers that form new legions of fans who will go to war with Baby Yoda fans is nothing short of astounding. Demonstrating that we are definitely in an interesting timeline to say the least.
