Rumbling Games Studios rolled out a new trailer for their upcoming title, Knights of Light The Prologue. The near three minute trailer reveals the game’s entry into Early Access, as well as gives gamers a look at some of the gameplay content.
Knights of Light: The Prologue is scheduled to enter into Early Access on Steam starting February 29th at the end of the month. The title sees players taking on the role of two brothers partaking in the events that lead up to the great battle of al-Qādisīyah, which was the downfall of the Sassanian empire to the invading Muslim armies.
Rumbling Games Studios decided to use the Unreal Engine 4 to rebuild 7th century middle-east, complete with villages, valleys, hillsides, deserts, and the culture that represented the Sassanian Empire during the middle ages.
You can get a glimpse of what the gameplay is like with the trailer below.
As you can see, the game offers two very distinct styles of play, with Aassem offering players quick-slashes and strikes as an assassin, while Qaikaa offers gamers a more heavy-hitting play-style themed around decapitations, throws, and tackles.
I actually like the way Qaikaa plays because we don’t get that style of fighting often. Usually those types of characters are bosses in hack-and-slash titles, but this time we get to play as the badass brute.
As mentioned in the FAQ and the YouTube description, the gameplay is themed after The Witcher 3 and Mount & Blade. You can definitely see that in the way Qaikaa handles, but the animations still need some polish before they can be compared to CD Projekt Red’s title.
They’re certainly on the right track, though.
One can also see some obvious Dynasty Warriors influences as well, with the special attacks and the ability to build up attack rage.
The Mount & Blade aspects come in with the way players can direct their troops during battle.
You can pull up a menu to quickly select where you want to position your troops or attempt to get them to flank the enemy or perform certain attack actions. You’ll have three distinct types of units under your command, including archers, cavalry, and infantry.
The game will stay in Early Access for about two years before completion.
The core combat mechanics and gameplay loops are already finished, but they have plans on polishing them up and refining them.
The biggest drawback a lot of people are likely going to have with the game is playing Muslim warriors wiping out the remnants of the Sassanians.
This was actually brought up in the Steam forums, where one gamer peppered the developers about any kind of pro-Muslim propaganda, and whether there would be one-armed, one-legged feminist Muslims fighting alongside the men, or if there would be a lot of pro-Muslim and anti-Western sentiments shared in the game, or if the game chat would be heavily censored to accommodate the feelings of Arabs.
Rumbling Games Studios actually replied in the forum, saying…
“[…] If you are questioning our intentions then rest assured. The game does not have propaganda or anything. You can definitely recognize it from how the game is described and presented. Furthermore the characters do not have to pray or worship and there isn’t any sort of faith mechanic. There is no mosques even instead we plan to introduce the Sassanian temples and symbols as a distinguished historical landmarks.
“Aside from the theme and historical setting the player is only reliving part of the actual story. And even the story we have implemented our own plot twists for better engagement. As for the fantasy route we did plan to have a side fantasy path about the Sassanian myths and legends but the scope is cut down right now during early access.
“Finally what do you mean there is already pro islamic garbage in the game chat ? We are asking you and everyone else of course to avoid any hate or provocative speech be respectful. If you found out something bothers you report it at once.”
We’ll see how this all turns out when Knights of Light: The Prologue makes its way to the Early Access front on February 29th. You can learn more about the game by visiting the Steam store.
