The Last of Us HBO Series In The Works, Craig Mazin And Neil Druckmann To Help With Adaptation

It looks like Hollywood is going all-in when it comes to using video games to make TV shows and movies. Not too long ago, the announcement of a Borderlands movie surfaced alongside the Monster Hunter adaptation, which follows on the heels of The Witcher Netflix spin. Well, as of now, HBO will have Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin pen The Last of Us HBO series while acting as the executive producers.

The Last of Us: Part 2 is due out on May 29th, 2020. Although the second title in the ongoing series will be the first to feature nudity and sexual content — unlike The Last of Us and The Last of Us: Left Behind — it won’t be the first series to jump mediums.

Yes, according to hollywoodreporter.com, gamers can expect PlayStation Productions — a TV and movie branch of SIE in Culver City, California, headed up by Asad Qizilbash and Shawn Layden in 2019 — to co-produce its first television series with HBO.

Furthermore, the website reports that Carolyn Strauss will assist as an executive producer along with Evan Wells — the president of Naughty Dog.

Also, The Last of Us HBO series will have help from Sony Pictures Television in the co-production department.

Furthermore, the guy behind the Chernobyl limited series, Mazin, claims that he’s an avid player of The Last of Us and had this to say about the upcoming HBO series:

“Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus. Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil.”

But that’s not all, Druckmann offered his thoughts on the collaboration:

“From the first time I sat down to talk with [Mazin] I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us. With Chernobyl, [Mazin] and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show.”

Nevertheless, HBO’s programming president Casey Bloys chimed in too and notes:

“This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us to partner with [Mazin], [Druckmann], [Strauss] and the teams at Sony, Naughty Dog and PlayStation to bring the virtual world of this acclaimed game to life.”

And out of the bunch, co-president of Sony Pictures Television Studios or Chris Parnell concluded the series of thoughts on the forthcoming adaptation by saying:

“This is the first of many shows we intend to develop with our friends at PlayStation Productions. The Last of Us is a brilliant achievement in storytelling and character development, and we are lucky to have the opportunity to work with this team to adapt it.”

No word on a release date has surfaced as of this writing, but the second installment in The Last of Us series will drop exclusively for PS4 on May 29th, 2020.
