Leave it to the South Koreans to bleed one genre across the lines into another and then turn it on its head. They’re known for challenged the status quo and pushing past the boundaries of the norm with their films, and one of the latest flicks from Well Go USA Entertainment, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Finecut Studios and the Peppermint Company is a creepy looking action-horror flick from director Park Hoon-Jung called The Witch: Subversion, and it’s due to hit Blu-ray and DVD in North America March 10th.
The film stars Kim Da-Mi as a supernatural girl who ends up with adoptive parents after a near death experience. However, she’s hunted by elite mercenaries sent to capture her, which turns out to be a rather fatal mistake for them.
It’s hard to think of a movie to compare The Witch: Subversion to, as it’s a little bit like John Wick meets The Grudge. I don’t really know how to describe it in comparative terms because it mostly seems to veer into territory mostly occupied by Japanese anime. In any case, you can check out the trailer below to get a glimpse at the film and some of the bizarre action sequences featured in the flick.
The Witch: Subversion released back in 2018 in South Korea, but it’s just slowly making its way Stateside.
I’ll be honest I completely missed this when it was first making the rounds in theaters. It looks like a pretty cool film.
It’s hard to get a proper gauge on what the action sequences are like, but there’s a lot of bone crunching, lots of bloodletting, and plenty of gore.
I imagine people who enjoyed films like The Yellow Sea and I Saw The Devil might take an interest in this film. I’m also picking up some slight vibes of Villainess.
It’s such a shame that all the really interesting, unique, and original films seem to come from out of every other place but Hollywood.
I guess if they spent less time diddling kids and vituperating the layman for not subjugating themselves to their Social Justice lunacy then maybe they could churn out a decent movie or two every once in a while. But until then, I guess we’ll just have to settle for foreign flicks coming out of Hong Kong, South Korea, and the indie sector.
The Witch: Subversion is due out on Blu-ray and DVD starting March 10th.
