I like what Extraction is trying to sell: a grizzled mercenary looking for redemption in a crap-hole of a country where no one is the good guy and trust is an ally that doesn’t live an inch beyond where you stand. Based on the trailer it’s still pushing out some of the whole strong-woman vibes that Left-wing agenda pushers are cosigned to propagate throughout media, but it also falls back to an encouraging trope: Only a white man would be selfless enough to travel to a foreign, violent-filled country to save those in dire need against all odds.
It’s a little bit like the movie Commando but in inverse. Instead of fighting through hordes of enemies to rescue a child like Arnold did in the 1987 classic, Hemsworth is fighting through hordes of enemies to protect a child he’s rescued.
This puts the Australian mercenary at the mercy of his own instincts, and reliant on whatever weapons he can get his hands on to protect the child of a drug lord. It looks like a violent, visceral, gritty good time. You can check out the trailer below.
The trailer gives away all of the plot points along with the movie’s twist: the strong independent woman who Hemsworth works for is actually bad.
I get the feeling this may not have been entirely funded by Netflix but is more like a partner project. The only reason I say that is because this trailer makes a straight white male look super heroic and altruistic – something that agitprop pushers such as Netflix despises – and all the villains are dark-skinned foreigners. In some ways it seems like the complete opposite of a Netflix film.
It’s even more shocking that it’s produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, the two converged directors who did the Avengers flicks.
Interestingly, though, the film is directed by the rugged good looking actor and stuntman, Sam Hargrave. So maybe this just slipped under Netflix’s radar? Or maybe this is one of the few films that they need to succeed to stay in business.
I also noticed that there is no sex or nudity, so you don’t have to worry about seeing any Bangladesh chicks stripped down, and it doesn’t look like there will be any time to shove any gay romances into the film (unless one of the bad guys are gay?).
Anyway, Extraction is due to go live on Netflix April 24th. It looks like a cool film, but remember that Netflix is converged and subscribing to the service is like cutting out the heart of your first born and placing it on a platter at the dinner table of the Devil.
