Amazon Studios’ MMO, best known as “New World,” has faced criticism from websites like Polygon, EuroGamer, and Engadget because it’s “problematic” and a “great white fantasy” that “promotes colonialism.” Well, the upcoming “questionable” MMO has been delayed due to the coronavirus.
After mainstream journalists colluded together to get the MMO changed because a Polygon writer asked the game’s studio head, Patrick Gilmore, about colonialism and brutality against natives, it looks like the game won’t release on its intended release date.
The reason behind New World not releasing as intended is due to the coronavirus, highlighting one of the many uphill battles this game is facing before public consumption.
Speaking of an uphill battle and controversy, it looks like people who pre-ordered the game aren’t too happy given the numerous comments on the following video that addresses the new release and closed beta date:
“Due to the impact of COVID-19, we have made the hard decision to delay the release of New World until August 25, 2020 and the start of Closed Beta to July. We hope you understand our decision to protect our team during these uncertain times while we re-focus on a timeline that will ensure that New World is the best possible game it can be.”
In other words, August 25th, 2020, marks the new release date for the game dubbed New World. Oh, and this also means the closed beta will launch sometime in July.
I’m sure Amazon Studios will have its fair share of social justice narratives in New World after the mainstream media barrage, especially given that recent remakes of older titles and new games during the era known as “current-year” are tailored for fence-sitters and social justice warriors.
