If there were a group of people immune to zombies, would they allow others into their community? Would they cast them out? Would they only let in certain people? Would they be the frontline defense (or offense) against zombie hordes? Well, Jeff Barnaby’s Blood Quantum attempts to address that conundrum, and the movie is streaming right now on the horror network called Shudder.
Blood Quantum originally had a limited release back in October of 2019 but I don’t remember the film at all. Given that Barnaby is Native American, the theme of the movie is obviously based on that aspect of his identity.
It follows a zombie outbreak that seems to be infecting everyone but the Mi’gMaq Indian reservation of Red Crow. They get bit but they don’t turn.
As more people outside of the reservation get bit the film takes the question of whether the indigenous tribes should let outsiders in or not. Some of the extended family of some tribe members are not immune, and some of the people they’re in relationships with are not immune, and so there’s a discussion of: do you attempt to save those you love (and those you don’t) or do you wall off the community to keep the undead out?

From a cinematic standpoint it looks pretty good.
According to some of the people who saw it at TIFF last year they claim that it’s gory and violent from start to finish, so that’s also a plus.
However, the other side of the coin is that critics liked it for its social commentary, and typically I like to veer away from movies pushing Left-wing propaganda, especially one about multiculturalism and the globalist agenda.
I haven’t read the spoilers yet, but if the film is about the Red Crow ultimately deciding to build a wall and keep zombies and non-infected out then that would be pretty funny. But given that the director is from Quebec, Canada I doubt he would push a message in his movie that would sully the Leftist punditry of Madame Justin Trudeau.
Anyway, the movie is streaming right now on Shudder.
However, if you want a zombie film that doesn’t have any social commentary or messages and features a badass, straight white male, definitely check out Johnny Strong’s Daylight’s End.
