Microprose is back with a vengeance. They’ve announced a handful of very interesting and play-worthy games in recent times, including Sea Power, Second Front and Task Force Admiral. Well, they have one more new game to share with gamers called The Mighty Eighth, and it’s about becoming one of several crew members of a flying fortress during World War II.
The Mighty Eighth will be first and foremost a 10-player VR simulation of manning and operating a B-17 Flying Fortress. If you’re unable to find nine other people to help you operate the massive flying kingdom of destruction, you can supplement those players with AI bots that will take their place.
Now I know what a lot of you are thinking “I hate VR, I don’t want to play this new sim with a VR HMD!” and Microprose already has a solution for you in the form of a non-VR rendition of the game, too.
You’ll be able to choose whether you want to play in the immersion of virtual reality, or as a typical hardcore flight/war sim.
The game will focus around maintaining a flight path for a bombing run, dropping bombs on the target, keeping your engines running, and blasting enemy fighter planes out of the sky.
The crew will also have to deal with AA guns, flak, and on-board fires.
In addition to manning the B-17s, you’ll also have the option of flying missions in a B-24 Liberator.
Micropose revealed that the planes will be designed with meticulous detail to represent the flying bombers, just as they were during World War II.
We don’t get many realistic, multiplayer simulation games like this, so I’m hoping that the developers deliver a proper product and in a functioning order when it comes time for The Mighty Eighth’s release. I’ve always enjoyed multi-crew sims, but typically not of the VR kind. I’ll certainly keep an eye out for this one as it nears release, and if you want to stay tuned in for more info you can sign up for the newsletter to receive additional news by visiting the official Microprose website.
