Rumor Watch: Suicide Squad and Gotham Knights Websites Appear

A few days ago, many outlets jumped on the rumor that several websites for upcoming Warner Brother Games titles had been discovered. More often than not, these listings turn out to be a fan or scalper securing domains ahead of companies, yet, nevertheless receive much fanfare. Only for the hype to die days or weeks later when it is confirmed not to be a legitimate listing from the publisher.

This phenomenon occurs with enough frequency; you’re best to simply ignore such rumors. Except for this time, as the listings appear to be most likely real.

Despite the potential pending sale of Warner Brothers Games, operations appear to be continuing as normal leading into their August E3 showcase. As for right now, suicidesquadgame.com  suicidesquadkillthejusticeleague.com and gothamknightsgame.com were each registered on June 19th, by MarkMonitor Inc.

What is currently known about either project is the Suicide Squad game is a GaaS title from Rocksteady, and the Batman title comes from WB Montreal. There is virtually nothing known about Rocksteady’s game, but the long-teased Batman game will feature the Court of Owls and is rumored to be a soft reboot set in a brand new timeline.

Rumor Analysis: Most Likely True

What is important to understand is this evaluation is not based on the “confirmation” by Eurogamer. A confirmation that reads as follows:

“Both projects are set to be teased at Warner Bros.’ upcoming DC Fandome event in August, Eurogamer understands.”

That is a vague statement that could mean they have had insider confirmation that both games are, in fact, in development and will be shown off in August. Or it could mean that based on likely probability, these games will finally be shown off in August because that is when the event is scheduled and has already been teased about having several major announcements.

What gives this rumor plausibility is the same company used to register other domains for Warner Brother Games is the company that has registered and operating these same domains. MarkMonitor Inc. can be seen as the company handling registration for mortalkombat.com and shadowofmordor.com. If Warner Brothers Games were going to prepare new websites, MarkMonitor would be the company they would use, until the sale of the company goes through. At which juncture, the buyer may decide to allow them to continue utilizing the same register and host company, or they may switch over to the company they utilize.
