Beyond Red Wave Arts is working on a new real-time strategy game with pause called Delphyq. It’s a little bit like a cross between the original Rainbow Six games from the 1990s and the sci-fi real-time tactics title, Breach.
Even though Delphyq isn’t due for release until later in the year during the third quarter, the developers let loose a free demo so gamers could get a taste of what the gameplay is like. You can grab the demo right now from over on the Steam store page.
The hook for the game is that you’re placed in the role of the Mastermind, an expert tactician who must analyze, scrutinize, and materialize a plan to overcome enemy forces. The game is played in segments that require you to first evaluate what resources you have available, and then choose the mission, and then plot out how the mission will be executed, and then actually execute that plan.
The setup and tactical mission planning reminds me of the original Rainbow Six games, where you would have to assess the threat, and then accommodate tactical measures to subdue the threat using the mission planning phase. It was vital in the older games to synchronize your attack strategies and movements in order to save the hostages and complete the mission.
In Delphyq you will have a real-time with pause combat mechanic to play around with, allowing you to pause and survey the situation before carrying out your next action.
The game isn’t reinventing the wheel, but for gamers who enjoy the sort of tension from turn-based strategy games, but without the actual turns, might take a liking to Delphyq. Obviously, you’ll need to be wary of any sort of Left-wing agenda pushing, but you can scope out the game for any possible subversive elements by downloading the demo.
