As each day passes and word of next-gen price hikes increase, more and more companies are now considering the aspect of raising the initial price point of boxed and digital games. And joining that list is Capcom. Moving into the next-gen of gaming, folks looking to pick up the company’s games across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X might find themselves coughing up $9.99 or more in the foreseeable future.
We’ve reported before that Ubisoft is considering raising its video game prices moving forward. Although it won’t happen this generation or early on in the upcoming gen of consoles and games, Ubisoft is thinking about a price hike from $59.99 to something higher.
Moreover, the conversation that got Ubisoft to consider a price hike next-gen stems from 2K and Visual Concepts announcing NBA 2K21 being more expensive for next-gen consoles (which is a game that’s under Take-Two).
Seeing that Ubisoft and Take-Two want to increase the base price on paying customers, word of these price hikes are spreading faster and faster, leading to companies like Capcom to ponder over the controversial action.
Thanks to website videogameschronicle.com, we learn that during Capcom’s most recent investors call, the company did not shoot down the idea of raising prices when asked about the ever-growing topic.
With that said, you can read Capcom’s response to an investor regarding price hikes in the games industry right here:
“We do not have a set policy at this time. We will consider our approach having analyzed both our strengths and weaknesses while closely monitoring industry trends.”
So what does this all mean? Well, it means that Capcom’s next-gen games have a chance of hitting store shelves and the digital scene with higher prices, given that the company is currently evaluating its strengths, weaknesses, and industry trends.
With all of that said, what are your thoughts on all of this? Do you think more companies will continue to raise prices moving into the next-generation, or do you think this is all talk?
