Deceiver Is A Philosophical Shooter With Some Parkour And Tower Defense Gameplay

One man studio, Helvetica Scenario, is ran and operated by a certain Evan Todd. He’s been slaving away at what he deems to be a “philosophical shooter” called Deceiver. The game is about escaping from the very antithesis of a Euclidean paradise by parkouring your way through various first-person platforming challenges, and then fighting through a series of NPC enemies.

The core concept of the game revolves around escaping the planet, which is about to die. Only the rich were able to afford to leave while those who were less fortunate were left to rot and die.

The game plays out in two very distinct parts. The first part is all about the parkour. You’ll run, jump, climb, and scout the area on foot as a guy trying to escape from the planet. However, in order to get anywhere you’ll need to take over zones. You’ll need to collect spark, which in turn will allow you to power up your forces and fight to control more of the zones.

The combat phase is a little more complex to comprehend, as you’ll take control of a unit and attempt to wipe out the forces controlling that zone in order to take charge of that zone for yourself. The real hook is that some of these zones are controlled by other human players, creating an asymmetrical multiplayer conundrum to the task of getting enough resources to get off the planet alive. You can see what the gameplay is like with the announcement trailer below.

So the combat phase gets a little trickier to understand, it’s a bit like a non-conforming third-person shooter. You’ll not only be able to control units to take down enemies, but you can also use your spark to bring more allied units onto the battlefield to help you out, or you can work with (or against) other players in real-time online modes to take the fight to the enemies and acquire the resources you need to in order to escape.

Some gamers might see this as more typical anti-capitalist propaganda from the Left, which has been rampant across social media these last few years, others might simply see it as an opportunity to take part in a mixed breed game that combines single-player objectives with multiplayer competitiveness (or cooperativeness).

The visuals were inspired by TRON and the story was inspired by philosophy.

This indie project is still currently in development, but you can learn more about Deceiver by visiting the game’s official website.
