The 7th Guest: 25th Anniversary Edition Now Available On GOG, Steam For $9.99

MojoTouch and Trilobyte Games announced that The 7th Guest: 25th Anniversary Edition is currently available right now over on GOG.com and the Steam store for $9.99. During the launch of the game you can get it for 15% off the normal price so instead of paying $9.99 you can grab a copy for just $8.49.

DSO Gaming picked up the news that the game has launched on the digital distribution services, but completely skipped Epic’s Epic Games Store because apparently the distributor doesn’t care for classic games, good indie titles, or practically anything that isn’t an AAA title or ideologically driven propaganda.

The 25th anniversary edition celebrates one of the most critically acclaimed FMV games from back in the 1990s, where full motion puzzle games were all the rage. It includes all new menus designed for accessibility, along with revamped controls, and three new options for the music, including the fully orchestrated soundtrack, the HQ MIDI option, or the Adlib option. You can see some of the features in play with the launch trailer below.

The anniversary edition also features fully remastered voiceover audio, along with optional subtitles, and FMV upscaling for high-resolution output. You can also play with the original retro graphics as well.

The new version still features all of the original game’s puzzles, and the 22 different 3D rendered rooms, along with the new skip-movie functionality that will allow you to fast-forward through any of the game’s sequences.

In addition to all of the old stuff remastered for today’s audiences, there’s also a number of new extras, too. There’s an all new making of featurette, along with 19 deleted scenes and 34 deleted audio parts, a 157 page The 7th Guest novel, along with the original script, the Stauf Files booklet, and a digital scan of the 41 page original game manual.

I should warn you that according to the user reviews this particular version of the game is actually a mobile port for PC. This is apparently not an upscaled or remastered update of the CD-i version. So some people are suggesting that it may not be worth it if you don’t want to play a slightly fixed up version of the mobile port.

[Update:] MojoTouch offered an update on one of the reviews explaining that this version of the game was built from the ground up supporting Windows, and that some of the remastered content from the CD-i version is featured in the 25th Anniversary Edition, saying…

First, the game is NOT a Mobile port. The new 25th Anniversary edition software is based on ScummVM code which supports Windows from the get-go.

We did take many of the improvements we added to the Mobile version and enabled them also for Windows, but we carefully adapt them to be good for Desktops.

Second, here are feedbacks to the points you raised. Please contact us via email if you like to discuss these (or other points) more.

1. The game FPS is the not lower than the original game (and no frames are missing). You can run the Free DLC “Legacy Edition” and compare it for yourself. When moving around the FPS is increased for smoother, more modern, gameplay. But there isn’t a situation which it’s lower than the original.

2. The new edition does uses CD-i version audio (improved English quality and new languages). The video of the CD-i version, although with more frames (so it have smoother playback), as much lower quality. The PC version video is 640×320 compared to the 368×176 of the CD-i. That’s 316% pixels on the PC videos!

You can see (and compare) some CD-i videos under Extras -> Deleted Scenes.

We did notice that the PC videos that show actors can be improved using de-interlacing. But due too technical issues, this can’t be added easily. We do hope to add this in a future update, if this release will be a commercial success.

Nevertheless, you can learn more about the 25th anniversary edition or you can pick up a digital copy from the Steam store for $9.99.
