Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal is a timeless classic from 1982. The movie was a live-action, dark fantasy adventure featuring a bunch of puppets. For kids it was the sort of film that was filled with both wondrous and nightmare-inducing imagery. Well, Netflix wants to either respect or ravage those childhood memories with their upcoming limited series based on Jim Henson’s iconic film called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
The Netflix project is still honoring the age-old practical effects and puppeteer work that helped define the visual timelessness of the original film. At the end of May they dropped a new trailer, revealing that starting August 30th you’ll be able to check out the prequel series based on The Dark Crystal. You can check out the trailer below.
The trailer almost looks like something straight out of the 1980s.
I can’t complain about that at all. I was more-so shocked they relied on actual puppets instead of going the awful CGI route for the characters. It’ll definitely help with watching the 10-episode series before watching the original 1982 film, because there’s going to be a lot of congruous effects to retain visual continuity, which definitely helps as both projects age with time.
According to Good Housekeeping, the series will follow the elf-looking creatures establish a rebellion against the vulturous Skeksis.
All of this takes place before the events of the 1982 film. So the writers are going to have a task on their hands trying to focus on worldbuilding without undermining everything that comes after.
Prequel storytelling is hard business.
As far as the quality is concerned, all I can really say is that it looks like the production crew really nailed that dark fantasy vibe of the original. The creatures look weird and unsettling, and the world is both idyllic and frightening. It’s a weird mix of a mid-summer’s daydream fused with an ancient nightmare. It’s a tough balance to pull off successfully but we’ll see how the new team does when The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance drops on August 30th this summer.
Of course, I should warn you not to let rose tinted glasses get in the way of principle. Netflix is a converged company and highly supportive of the SJW agenda. Don’t let their pageantry for nostalgia blind you of their propaganda.
