Two companies that have a bad rep amongst gamers have signed a multi-year partnership that sees these powerhouses sharing tech and other platforms to bolster profits. That’s right, Activision Blizzard and Google have a brand new multi-year strategic relationship that will see the pair working together in the foreseeable future.
As per gamerheadquarters.com, Activision Blizzard will find game hosting infrastructure dependent on Google Cloud while Youtube will be the exclusive streaming partner worldwide — except in China.
The website makes mention of live broadcasts of esports leagues and events on Activision and Blizzard’s end appearing on Youtube Gaming. This includes games like Overwatch, Call of Duty, Hearthstone, and more under Activision Blizzard.
The publication site cites Sunil Rayan, head of gaming and Google Cloud, saying the following:
“We’ve worked closely with Activision Blizzard for the past few years across mobile titles to boost its analytics capabilities and overall player experience. We are excited to now expand our relationship and help power one of the largest and most renowned game developers in the world.”
Although that’s from Google’s end, we also get to hear from the Activision side with Jacques Erasmus, chief information officer at Activision Blizzard, noting:
“We’re excited to partner with Google to drive the next generation of gaming innovation for the industry. Google Cloud’s best-in-class infrastructure gives us the confidence to deliver great entertainment to our fans around the world.”
Furthermore, both Activision Blizzard and Google claim that players will benefit from “premium network quality-of-service,” which includes low packet loss when playing “high-fidelity games” on any device.
Activision Blizzard insists that it can now tap into Google Cloud’s AI tools to bring gamers “curated recommendations” for in-game promotions to freshen up any gaming experience.
Personally, this partnership reeks of the usual scummy stuff of the past, but we’ll see what this multi-year relationship brings throughout 2020 and beyond.
