Dr PinkCake’s romantic drama, Being a DIK, is a college-campus visual novel romp about a young man from a low-income family who moves away from the small town to join a university. He ends up being talked into the local Delta Iota Kappa fraternity, but things take a drastic turn for the young lad when he gets wrapped up in a spiral of drug, sex and drama.
The selling point of Being a DIK is based around its choice-driven actions, where players will have to make some tough decisions on how they interact with others, what sort of personality they adopt for the main character, and ultimately what relationships you’ll pursue throughout the adventure.
Depending on the personality you develop for the main character will determine which girls are attracted to or repulsed by his behavior. You can get a glimpse at some of the hotties you’ll encounter and locations you’ll visit in Being a DIK courtesy of the launch trailer below.
The trailer is pretty hilarious at the end, where the chick Maya is asking Derek about what he supports, and goes through the typical Twitter trappings of asking if he supports women’s rights, equality, and other nonsense, to which Derek appropriately replies with “No!” just until she gets to “vaginas!”. Although, I think the segment would have been funnier if he had said “No” to “vaginas” but then he followed it up by replying with “Pussies!” and then Maya responded with “Yes!”.
Anyway that’s a minor nitpick that’s neither here nor there.
The first season of the game features four playable episodes, including Episode 1 – The Initiation, Episode 2 – Maggot Brothers, Episode 3 – 100%, and Episode 4 – When Worlds Collide.
As showcased in the trailer, the game not only contains CG images (of which there are more than 8,000) but it also has 361 minor animated sequences, too.
The game features about eight through 12 hours of play, with obvious replayable aspects based on the different choices and outcomes that can occur throughout the playthrough.
Additional seasons will be released as separately sold DLC packs for the main game.
I would also be remiss in not bringing up the fact that this is a clear double standard by Valve, allowing Being a DIK on Steam uncensored, while a similar college-themed game from Dharker Studios called My Girlfriend was banned from Steam, even though it was the all-ages version.
There’s a clear bias in what Valve’s taste police allow through and what they don’t, and it should rub every up-and-coming developer and small-time publisher the wrong way; but alas too much misdirection and information stifling campaigns have muddied the waters on the topic of censorship, so most developers just suck it up and lose out on revenue or attempt to complete overhaul their game in a blind attempt to suit Valve’s unclear and inconsistent standards. I digress.
Being a DIK: Season 1 is coming soon to Steam, and you can wishlist the game right now over on the Steam store page.
