Phil Spencer Is Currently In Talks With Japanese Devs And Publishers About The Future Of Gaming

We’ve reported on multiple occasions that Phil Spencer is looking to increase the Xbox catalog of games by bringing more Japanese titles and RPGs to the Series X next-gen. Well, it looks like Spencer and the Xbox team are doing just that according to a new tweet.

Late last year, videogameschronicle.com posted up an interview with Spencer, which focused on the green brand wanting to bring more Japanese and Asian titles to gamers.

Spencer noted in the interview that acquiring Japanese and other Asian talents would be “a real opportunity” for Microsoft to grow.

However, since this is current year — a time where sexy-time content is forbidden — we’ll likely be treated to butchered Japanese or Asian games that are toned down to fit the usual Western localization scheme.

Nevertheless, Spencer is serious about the Eastern invasion according to the following tweet that website gamingbolt.com has up:

Great to be back in Japan with the team talking and listening to amazing studios and publishers about 2020 and beyond. Really strong energy and excitement here about gaming’s future.

— Phil Spencer (@XboxP3) January 20, 2020

In case you can’t read the tweet, Spencer notes that he’s happy to be back in Japan with the Xbox team. The tweet also reveals the Xbox team is in discussion with various Japanese studios and publishers about 2020 and the “future of gaming.”

Although not much is known about these future Japanese games, we do know that they’ll be accompanied by RPGs.

We know this due to Spencer saying last year that the green brand has enough first-person shooters as well as third-person shooters and needs more role-playing games:

“Obviously first-person and third-person shooters have been strong, but it’s nice with Outer Worlds coming out, Wasteland… I think RPG is an area that we purposefully focused on and wanted to do more.

But it’s also, as we’re watching Xbox Game Pass grow and grow, we’re seeing more genres enter, and whether it’s genres that used to be popular and coming back or creators trying new things because they have an audience that’s always there and they can think how to deliver stories to those people… But I do think RPG is an area that we should focus [on].”

So what can Xbox gamers look forward to next-gen? More games from Japanese and Asian devs, as well as RPGs.
