Sabotage Studio’s Sea of Stars is a Chrono Trigger-inspired role-playing game that hearkens back to the days of 16-bit adventuring on the SNES, channeling classics like Secret of Mana and Terranigma, but with the action-oriented turn-based combat present in Square Enix’s SNES classic.
The game is currently crowdfunding over on Kickstarter, and it’s already managed to accrue more than $109,000 with 29 days to go on the campaign. They were originally only seeking $90,000, so the campaign is well over what they were asking for. At this point they’ll be focusing on hitting those stretch goals.
Sea of Stars is a prequel to their Ninja Gaiden-inspired era-hopping platformer, The Messenger.
You play as two kids with special abilities that can be fostered throughout the game as you attempt to save the world from the monstrosities of an evil alchemist. You can see what the gameplay is like with the debut trailer below, courtesy of IGN.
Visually the game looks like it’s on point.
The classical sprite designs and use of a menagerie of colors to create a visually absorbing palette almost makes Sea of Stars look like a long lost SquareSoft game from the late 1990s.
The turn-based combat looks like it maintains steady momentum to keep the action going without it being a slog, and the animations are absolutely on point, especially for the screen-filling bosses that are truly larger than life.
However, take note that Sabotage Studio’s already has a history of bending the knee to the outrage brigade. They had previously removed a joke from The Messenger after some snowflakes complained about the joke.
It’s hard to get excited for a game where the creators are so willing to tilt the ear to people who hate gaming culture, yet rely on the money of gamers to fuel their creative endeavors.
That’s not to mention the black male and white female characters is more groan-inducing imagery that we’ve been bombarded with in recent times to the point of it becoming stomach churning.
But if you still want to learn more about the game you can do so by visiting the Kickstarter page.
Sea of Stars is expected to release in 2022 for PC and home consoles.
