Sony loyalists might not want to hear this, but the company’s next generational launch has increasingly become grimmer with each new piece of information that has come out. Things weren’t looking good from the start after the company alienated the Japanese developers and their audience with their bout of censorship and wokeness during California’s reign over the company. Matters have since only become worse with the revelation the console is significantly less powerful than Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, but also possesses rumored overheating and performance issues.
Some have argued that specs don’t matter, but we can turn back to early parts of this last generation to see the Xbox One had repeated issues of failing to keep frame rates stabilized and in some instances had to have a slightly downgraded version of multi-platformed titles to have them run properly on the console, as covered by Tweaktown.
Now the predicament has gotten worse for the company according to a new report from Bloomberg. For starters and possibly the worse news, the previously reported $470 price-tag has been proven incorrect as the console will now cost between $500 and $550. As the Xbox Series X price hasn’t been confirmed we don’t know how bad that will be for the company, but even with parity consumers will likely go for the better value. If Microsoft can get the Series X out cheaper Microsoft and Sony will be switching places at the start of the next generation.
Sony has also confirmed they will not delay their launch plans unless Microsoft delays theirs. As Microsoft’s manufacturing compound did not experience the same lockdown Foxconn has, that is highly unlikely to happen. As a result, Sony is expected to have between 5 and 6 million units available for sale compared to the 7.5 for their first year of the PS4’s life cycle.
Sony is reported to have a plan to deal with all the above issues for the Playstation 5. Their plan consists of riding the hype and popularity of the PS4 into the PS5. The exact same plan that previously failed spectacularly going into the PS3. A console kept alive by the very weebs they’ve since chased off and Microsoft is looking to court.
Loyalists may stand by Sony’s side, but unless Microsoft does something seriously hair-brained between now and Q4 they are practically guaranteed the next generation. Especially if PS5 brick themselves with heat issues.
