Brandon Christensen’s Canadian-made horror flick, Z, is a Shudder exclusive horror flick that delves into the terror of an imaginary friend that latches onto a little boy in a really, really bad way. The family begins to suffer due the boy’s obsession with this friend, and eventually the imaginary man is no longer imaginary, and his manifestations bring ruin and death to the family.
The movie stars Keegan Connor Tracy – who looks surprisingly like a cross between Emily Mortimer and Anna Paquin – as the mother of a troubled young boy who has an increasing fascination with an imaginary friend that his teachers find to be disturbing. She attempts to better understand her son’s issues, but he dives deeper and deeper into a cycle of morbid drawings and depictions of his imaginary friend, manifesting in ways that begin to trouble the parents.
His mother attempts to put the kid on psychotropic drugs, much to the indignation of the father, and things only get worse from there. You can check out the trailer below courtesy of One Media.
The trailer attempts to paint the film as a slow burn horror-thriller, which could definitely work well for a film that has a well constructed payoff.
One of the things that the trailer plays on is the idea that maybe the boy isn’t the problem after all but maybe it’s the mother.
This would be a neat twist to the story – that maybe the boy has a vivid and macabre imagination, but the mother takes it too far in trying to solve the problem, becoming the problem in the process.
I doubt they would go that way, but it’s an interesting thing to ponder, and something that they at least hinted at in the trailer.
I also like the one clip in the trailer featuring the therapist who comes to visit them, and the mother is freaking out as she attempts to point out that the thing is behind the therapist.
Also, props to the marketers for constructing the trailer in a way that doesn’t give everything away within the near two minute runtime.
It goes without saying that a ton of movies have trailers that seem to give everything and the kitchen sink away within the span of just three minutes.
If the film looks interesting to you, Z is streaming on the Shudder service.
