Despite needing a mountain of improvements, including basic matchmaking, Dead by Daylight‘s developers have unveiled their path forward will be the increased inclusion of diverse characters. By diverse, of course they mean specifically neither white nor straight, but this shouldn’t be surprising since they’re on the Traitors of America master list.
Initially, the team had promised to keep politics out of the game. A rather pragmatic move as the sexual orientation of characters in a game without so much as dialog is irrelevant. After being barraged by SJWs, the team has opted to displease the majority of their audience to please the social media crowd who has no intention of ever playing the game, along with an obnoxiously vocal minority. In a Facebook post, they explained their intentions…
If you can’t read the image, here is what it says.
In the past, we’ve mentioned that we didn’t aim to give a sexual orientation to our characters. The idea was to let players create their own narrative and identify themselves to the character they most related to.
Now that Dead by Daylight’s lore is getting more and more detailed, we realized that we didn’t stay true to this vision. We did set our character’s preferences in the past, notably in heterosexual relationships. We recognize that this no longer reflects our original position. The game continues to evolve, and thanks to your precious feedback and questions regarding our character’s diversity, we have reviewed our plans and our position.
We see Dead by Daylight as an inclusive game and we’re always looking to improve the way we reflect those values in our game. We are now better equipped to integrate diversified identities to the game and into the lore in the future.
Thank you for your continous support.
The Dead by Daylight Team
What makes this announcement particularly annoying, aside from simply not wanting to deal with politics in a horror game, is the simple fact the game needs an overhaul. For years the game has been kept alive by the steady influx of new killers and survivors. With each release, the player count would once again swell, and any losses over the previous months would be erased. A good thing for active players, but it has created an environment where the developers didn’t need to fix the issues with the game.
Recently the developers attempted to take the same formula and make a new game called Death’s Garden. Without the horror motif to keep the game engaging or relevant, player adoption was low. Player retention was equally poor as the same toxic mentality that plagues Dead By Daylight‘s survivor community manifested in Death’s Gardens contestant community. After multiple overhauls to remedy the issues with the game, the developers realized it wasn’t going to work, so development was terminated.
As a positive, the failure of the other game brought some actual improvements to Dead By Daylight, including a proper lobby system that works most of the time. Yet other basic mechanics, such as matchmaking, are entirely nonexistent. Killers often are forced to play against maxed out survivors who, despite their already excessive perk advantage, will half the time choose to use every exploit available and outright cheat.
If somehow you win, flip a coin to see if you’re going to get a harassing message. These are just a sample of the numerous issues the developers continue not to do anything to remedy. Instead, they’ve decided the most essential thing Dead by Daylight needs is gender and sexual politics. Not actual gameplay improvements or a graphical overhaul, but politics.
