Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Marks Historic Anniversary Following PlayStation 2 Launch

Rockstar Games' legendary open-world crime title Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has reached another major milestone since its original release on October 26, 2004, for the PlayStation 2. The title quickly set an untouchable high-water mark for open-world freedom and sheer ambition across the video game industry.

Following Carl "CJ" Johnson across the vast state of San Andreas, the adventure pushed Sony's 128-bit hardware to its breaking point by packing three massive cities, extensive gang turf wars, and deep character customization onto a single DVD. The title remains the best-selling PlayStation 2 game in history, racking up more than 27.5 million copies sold globally across its original run.

While modern remasters and the Definitive Edition suffered heavy backlash from purists over botched visual changes, the authentic 2004 classic still commands immense reverence among gamers preparing for the arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI.
