In current year, pantsu type games and other unique Japanese titles that often put fanservice and their audience first are either shunned by Western devs and publishers or outright censored. I’m not sure what this means, but the Xbox Team wants more Japanese and Asian third and first-party games on the Xbox family of consoles.
That’s right, videogameschronicle.com has another piece up on the Xbox Team and Phil Spencer, and this time it’s about the green brand wanting to bring more Japanese and Asian titles to gamers.
The website in question goes on to explain to readers that Phil Spencer and crew believe acquiring Japanese and other Asian talents is “a real opportunity” for Microsoft to grow.
But, if future Japanese or Asian games are butchered and toned down to fit the usual Western localization scheme, wouldn’t it hurt more than help? While we wait to find out, here’s what VGC has up regarding Spencer on the Xbox brand gaining more Japanese titles:
“I think we have a hole in Asia. I’ve said that both to Matt Booty and publicly. I would love to have more of an influence in our own first-party team from Asian creators. There’s nothing that’s imminent, so it’s not a pre-announce of something. But if you just plotted where we are on the map with our first-party, that’s a real opportunity for us.
I love the fact we can stand here and announce Yakuza and Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy coming. That’s through third-party relationships, which take time. And we’ve been really focused on that. But I think we could have stronger first-party creation capability there. We have in the past and I think we should again.”
VGC also highlighted Spencer saying back in June that “it would be nice” if Microsoft acquired an Asian developer, “in particular a Japanese studio.” And lo, here’s the quote:
“I think it would be nice if we found an Asian studio, in particular a Japanese studio, to add [to our studios]. I liked it when we had some first-party capability in Japan. We have a small team there, but I think we can do more.”
Lastly, the Xbox Team is hitting up the third-party route by bringing Yakuza, Kingdom Hearts, and Final Fantasy to the family of Xbox. However, the team does not rule out first-party Japanese titles coming in the foreseeable future.
