Emiya Alter has been the subject of quite a bit of controversy in recent times when it comes to the Fate/Grand Order series. His appearance is tied to his story and the over-utilization of magic that resulted in him having darkened skin. However, in the West the typical Liberal Progressives saw that as “black face”, and have been butchering and censoring his appearance by attempting to change his coloration both in the games and recently in the Funimation and Crunchyroll airing of the 2017 special anime OVA of Fate/Grand Order; Moonlight/Lostroom.
Twitter user Ebicentre, who has also contributed to One Angry Gamer in the past, spotted the change and informed the wider audience about Emiya’s color being altered for the Western version of the anime.
Oh, great, what a way to begin 2020 by seeing a relic from the 4Kids days. Unbelievable. Are we really going down this route, Aniplex? pic.twitter.com/HasBgH5PTD

If you’re not sure entirely what you’re looking at, notice that on the far right of the screen the dark-skinned fellow has been lightened in first image on the left, whereas he’s supposed to be dark like in the second image on the right.
There’s a larger image comparison you can check out below, taken from two different trailers for Fatel/Grand Order: Moonlight/Lostroom. At the top is the Western version, whereas at the bottom is the original Japanese release.
You can see that in the altered Western version Emiya’s colors look distorted as they attempted to lightened him, especially around the edges of his hairline.
You can see the clip in question as captured by Anime Freeze. Check it out below.
While the clip from Anime Freeze cuts off before the damning part, there are screenshots showing that Emiya’s palette was swapping between his gunfire like a rapid fire edition of Michael Jackson through the decades.

You can see the seven second sequence in motion thanks to ApocalypseIndustries, who uploaded it to Twitter.

If you compare it to the original 2017 airing of the Japanese version of Fate/Grand Order: Moonlight/Lostroom, Emiya is depicted with dark skin and stays dark-skinned throughout the entire clip.
You can see the original two and a half minute scene courtesy of Wilhelm Von Einzbern. The short sequence involving Emiya takes place around the 1:51 mark.
A similar thing happened with the mobile version of Fate/Grand Order, too, even after the localizers said they weren’t going to censor the game. They still ended up censoring Emiya by changing his skin tone after the localizer inferred that the original design was racist.
What’s so funny about it is that making a character too light – like in the case of Nessa from Pokemon Sword and Shield – has the rabid mobs on the Left yelling “white-washing!” while making a character too dark (even though the character isn’t actually black) has the exact same crowd yelling “black-face!”.
It’s true that when you play the game of sociopolitics with identitarians you never, ever win.
(Thanks for the news tip Ebicentre)
