At a certain point, one has to grapple with the reality that by covering an SJW’s insane often racist, sexist, and bigoted rants that you are in essence giving them the attention they want. For in their eyes they are creating a dialog or bringing attention to often non-existent plights, which makes them a champion of social justice.
To nip any glory Fred Hicks from Evil Hat Games may perceive himself having gained from this coverage, let’s preface everything by simply pointing out that many non-white males disagree with him so he’s calling Blacks, Latino, women, Asians, Arabs, homosexuals, and LGBT sub-human by default with his statement he posted on Twitter on February 3rd, 2020.
Cast a wide net and you’re going to catch things you didn’t intend to.
“I don’t want politics in my games.”
No, what you want is an absence of discomfort and a restoration of the status quo of comfort offered by your privileges.
That is, itself, a political stance, and representative of the politics that have been in games for decades.
I assure you, for the folks who lack your privileges, your discomfort is a minor event vs the vast ocean of daily “discomfort” they swim in.
If you have a problem with us making an effort to minimize their much more significant discomfort when it comes to our games… bye!
Relatedly – the Century Club from SOTC (2006) is a social justice organization, in 2010’s the Dresden Files RPG’s fictional author Billy openly wrestles with how women are portrayed in the art. We’ve often not gone as far as we could or should, but our politics have been there.
Ultimately if you’re JUST NOW getting upset about politics in Evil Hat’s games:
1) You aren’t a fan of Evil Hat and you’re just jumping on the outrage bandwagon, ya lemming.
2) You’ve recently tried our games and don’t like the politics we’ve always had.
3) You’re 10yrs late.
Of course if you’re really that outraged about us admitting to the existence of HPL’s racism, it just does not reflect well on you. Near as I can tell:
– You like racism and want it in games, or
– You like not having to think about racism, which I have to tell you, supports it.
This is where some misinformed/ignorant subhuman will bust into the mentions and say angry things about how dare we make something based on HPL’s mythos if we don’t like his racism.
They won’t say it quite like that, but it’s what they mean.
Fuck that obvious idiocy.
They’ll also get absolutely apoplectic (“coward!”) when I block them, as though I owe them any of my local oxygen.
I do not.
They do not support what I believe in.
They do not support ($/other) my company.
They have no value in my world.
So I prune my garden of such weeds.
At the very least as you stare in wonder at the insanity that pervades his rant as Fred jumps from dismissal to justifying back to dismissal like a hormonal teen having a mental breakdown is that he is well aware that their virtue signaling has destroyed their company’s reputation. Social Justice Warriors tend to possess an innate desire to stand out socially, more so than the average person in fact. For them to be looked upon with ill repute is entirely unacceptable.
What triggered this rant is unknown. Perhaps their initial signal boost has worn off as SJWs never intended to become customers or perhaps he’s reached the breaking point with the majority of influencers just ridiculing them as parasites using someone who was vastly more talented then they are’s work while verbally denouncing him at the same time.
Where to begin breaking this insane diatribe is difficult to ascertain without devolving this into an academic rebuttal. That a person who gets paid to make games for a living is lecturing people about privilege while calling the working class who disagrees with his upper spoiled posh bubble induced ideology subhuman and wastes of air is a staggering demonstration of lack of self-awareness.
It is the same exact lack of self-awareness that allows one to not get that you cannot in the same breath denounce, trash, insult, and berate the very mythos you are attempting to profit from without alienating and angering the wider community. Turning them against you as the outsider stepping in uninvited to preach how you are their savior.
Never mind that people of all races and sexual orientations have enjoyed and the works of Lovecraft and the universe that has grown from a variety of authors with his blessing before he passed away. Nor that people like Fred stand on their soapbox, but never listen nor give a platform for the average person they claim to speak from, yet someone sees themselves as not a cultural invader, but a noble hero here to save people from themselves.
Honestly now, the abyss has nothing on these people nor ever will. Keep the rabble out.
