News coming out of the Hollywood Reporter indicates Netflix will soon be hit with a round of layoffs centered around its marketing department. Before jumping on the Netflix is broke bandwagon, understand that it will be a few years when their bonds are called in, for now, this is a simple reconfiguring of their marketing strategy and cutting the excess by 15 people.
The report goes on to state how Netflix is looking to shift its marketing focus away from specific shows like The Witcher and onto Netflix as a service.
From a marketing angle, the shift in focus towards highlighting the service is a brain dead move. Perhaps in the early 2000s when no one understood what streaming was this would have been a brilliant marketing move to convince people to adopt the service, but today when Netflix is such a household name that it is used for casual hookups and blowjobs there is hardly any point.
Make no mistake, the pivot from advertising focusing on shows to the service is because they have few shows that aren’t anti-white racism, male bashing, or promoting and exploiting LGBT agenda to masquerade the not-so-subtle underlying Marxist, communist, or progressive narratives.
Just look at what is coming out over the first six months for Netflix. A near-endless procession of snoozefests, wokeness and a few returns of hit shows. What few anime options coming out are easily acquired on the seven seas, which have grown more popular with the rise of decentralizing content among numerous paid services.
Advertising themselves as a streaming platform when streaming is an already established market isn’t going to generate attention for the platform. Even Disney has discovered with the conclusion of The Mandalorian that it is not brand recognition that drives streaming subscriptions, but what shows you are offering to consumers. After the repercussions of informing people that Netflix is Netflix are felt, it will be a decision they back away from faster than they did Qwikster.
