EA and DICE will stop work on Battlefield V after June. With that said, it looks like the team at the latter company is gearing up to develop the next Battlefield experience, according to a new senior development director job listing for the Battlefield franchise.
Battlefield V will no longer see development support after June of this year. However, it looks like EA and DICE are working on the next Battlefield experience as of now, given a new job listing post on ea.gr8people.com.
In addition to the above, on April 15th, 2020, EA’s web portal shows a newly opened job space for a senior development director for the Battlefield franchise.
Here’s what the team at DICE is looking for from said position:
“We believe that you are passionate about coaching and leadership. You have 8+ years working as a project manager; 6+ years of experience working in a AAA game development (extra credit if you have experience in Live Services); you have success as a mediator and have many conflict resolution tools in your tool belt; you are comfortable talking across all levels of an organization. You always knows the status of your project and can visualize that status for any audience.”
Falling in-line with the above job listing description is (EA CEO) Andrew Wilson’s response to an investor during a November 2019 investors call, which Wilson had this to say about live-service mechanics being in the next-gen Battlefield game:
“In terms of the overall franchise direction, I don’t think you should read into this a dramatic change in franchise direction other than it will be driven around live service as the nature of our industry now. It will be cutting edge. It will be high fidelity. It will be doing things in the context of multi-play and social play and competition that Battlefields to this point have not done. And we do believe it will be a really, really exciting title in FY ‘22.”
What we can draw from this is that multiplayer, live-service mechanics, and high fidelity graphics are going to be a focal point as well as competitive play, unlike any past Battlefield title.
It’s somewhat unclear if the next-gen Battlefield game will ship with a story mode given that it will do “multiplayer” and “social play” unlike any “Battlefields to this point.” However it goes, we do know that DICE is working on the next title as we speak thanks to the senior development director’s bulleted-points:
- Manage planning in all development stages from pre-pro, production, launch, and live
- Scope and Capacity Management
- Track and communicate project status
- Present options and guide the decision-making process
- Manage and grow team members
- Guide your team to achieve our milestones on time and at quality
- Identify delivery risks and mitigation plans
- Align all involved teams towards the outlined goals
- Create new processes, evaluate existing processes, and evolve process to support the team
- Guide current processes to encourage innovation and improvements
- Document and share what we learn with the team and studio
We already know that the next Battlefield is in the works and will release after next-gen consoles build up a substantial user base, but what is unclear is if base-PS4 and Xbox One users will have a chance at snagging a physical or digital copy?
While we wait to find out, it’s now official that the next-gen Battlefield game will have live-service mechanics when it releases in Fiscal Year 2022.
Lastly, are you excited for the next-gen Battlefield game? Are you not interested in the game, or do you think it will be yet another SJW dumpster fire like Battlefield V?
