While Mistress Corona-chan is shutting down subversive media, destroying the establishment, and bringing corporate greed-mongers to their knees, showing that sometimes not all pandemics are as bad as the media portrays, there’s some additional good news in the works related to video games being removed from the German index for banned properties.
On April 4th, 2020, Censored Gaming tweeted out that at the end of March the German index removed a handful of games from the list, including Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Rise of the Triad, The Chaos Engine (also known as Soldiers of Fortune), and Zero Tolerance.
Big news for gamers in Germany. March has seen some classic titles, including Mortal Kombat, removed from Germany’s censorship index. https://t.co/DoJnlqCrjS

As pointed out by Benji-kun, some of these games were censored anyway to avoid being banned in Germany, and yet they were banned anyway.
Well, now they’re removed from the list.
Also, take note that The Chaos Engine or Soldiers of Fortune, is in no way related to the early-aughts gory FPS from Raven Software and Gratuitous Games where you could dismember enemies by blowing off their body parts. It’s the old 1993 top-down shooter for home consoles from The Bitmap Brothers and Abstration.
There’s a longplay video of the Amiga version courtesy of AL82 that you can check out below.
It’s funny because games like Mortal Kombat II had to undergo some major censorship changes just to get on the SNES, altering the blood and gore to be more accommodating of Nintendo’s third-party censorship standards, but it still wasn’t enough for the German indexing board. It’s funny how the times have changed and Sony is the one with a censorship enforcement policy for third-party developers.
This is also one of those rare times where the news is actually good instead of bad.
I doubt it will matter that much to Germans since they probably already downloaded the games or ROMs from other places to get their fix.
But any reversal on censorship is a good thing, and now people can support these games legitimately in Germany.
(Thanks for the news tip CZ)
