Sony has unveiled some details regarding what will be presented during their upcoming State of Play. Those hoping for a price point, release day, or hardware updates will be disappointed as the company has confirmed none of that will be present during the presentation.
Instead, the upcoming presentation will focus on third party titles and PSVR, with the company attempting to show they are still going to support the PS4. Previously Sony has announced they had no plans to make games cross-generational as they did not wish to limit the creative power of their developers. This has proven to be a misstep for the company, one that Microsoft has capitalized on by promising they will continue supporting the Xbox One as not to leave consumers who purchased one leading up to the Series S’s launch disappointed in their purchase.
People will be able to watch the upcoming stream on both Youtube and Twitch on August 6th at 1:00 pm Pacific, 4:00 pm Eastern, and 9:00 pm BST.
It’s been a while… but State of Play returns this Thursday with a focus on third-party-published games coming to PS4 and PS VR. We’ll have a few PS5 game updates on third-party and indie titles you last saw in June’s PS5 showcase.
The episode is weighing in at 40+ minutes(!). We’ve got a great lineup in store featuring plenty of new gameplay footage and other game updates. Can’t wait to hear what you think!
And just to be super clear — there will be no PlayStation Studios updates in Thursday’s episode. There won’t be any updates around hardware, business, preorders, or dates either. On Thursday, our focus is squarely on showcasing some cool upcoming games coming to the broader PlayStation ecosystem. Should be fun!
The new State of Play episode airs Thursday, August 6 at 1:00pm Pacific Time / 4:00pm Eastern Time / 9:00pm BST, and you can watch it live on Twitch and YouTube.
See you Thursday!
What can be expected?
What follows is an educated guess, but note here that it is only that, not confirmed or leaked information.
Bethesda’s titles are the most likely candidate to be showcased during the State of Play. Back in June Deathloop and Tokyo: Ghostwire were both confirmed to be timed exclusives for the PS5, so it would make sense for them to make an appearance during the showcase.
It isn’t very likely, but it remains possible that we could get our first look at Starfield which will also be a timed exclusive for the PS5. This, I highly doubt, as it is rumored that Bethesda was ordered by Zenimax to scramble together their own conference, but if that leak is false, then the game being given proper billing by Sony is a good possibility.
As previously reported, Final Fantasy 16 is rumored to be PS5 exclusive and was initially supposed to be shown back in June, but was pulled for unknown reasons. August could be the month we see the official unveiling, but strategically Sony could be saving it for the presentation where they announce the pricing and release day.
If Final Fantasy 16 is on the table, then the in development Just Cause 5 is as well. Don’t ask me how Just Cause 5 got green-lit after Just Cause 4 was an absolute flop, but according to the leaked listing of games to be shown at E3, it is in development.
Finally, Resident Evil Village is likely also to make an appearance as it was Sony’s showstopper for their June conference.
