Take a little bit of Daredevil, a hint of The Punisher, and some Mexican urban legends. Throw it all together and you get El Chicano, colloquially dubbed the “Ghetto Grim Reaper”.
Director Ben Hernandez Bray’s upcoming film was written in collaboration with Joe Carnahan, the director of The Grey and the upcoming remake of The Raid. Carnahan was also the badass director who called out The Last of Us director Neil Druckmann for being a stuck-up, pompous jerk-off.
Bray doesn’t have many other films under his belt, and he’s mostly just directed television episodes, which sadly bleeds through in the quality of the trailer for El Chicano, which you can check out below, courtesy of Movie Trailers Source.
So the general plot is that there’s an urban legend among the Mexican barrios that there’s some Punisher-type vigilante who rides around on a motorcycle dispensing justice on wrongdoers like Ghostrider.
A cop doesn’t entirely buy into the tales but notices the increasing violence destroying the city due to the Mexican gangs taking over and disrupting the peace.
Initially the cop feels helpless just until he gets attacked by the gangs one night and is on the verge of nearly losing his life before he gets red pilled, and wakes up to reality. He recognizes that it’s time to stop pussy-footing around and teach the criminals that the only justice that they can’t ignore comes from the end of a barrel filled with lead.
Thus marks the rise of El Chicano, who goes around busting up the criminal gang lords and putting the bad guys down with blade and bullet alike.
The film looks pretty cheap, but at least it appears to dive heartily into the story of a man trying to do the right thing to save society from itself. He’s also a family man with a wife, so this isn’t some Leftist subversion like other films out there or the kind of crap that Marvel currently has in the works.
To top it off, El Chicano embraces the full authority of the Second Amendment, potentially aiming to give movie goers the kind of cathartic experience of bringing criminals to justice that Netflix’s The Punisher failed to do.
You can look for El Chicano to beat some criminal gangs into a pulp on the big screen at a theater near you starting May 3rd, 2019.
