JoyMasher’s Blazing Chrome is an upcoming run and gun 2D side scrolling action game coming to Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch on July 11th. It will feature a 16 bit pixel art style that looks like something straight out of the early 90’s.
There will be a local co-op mode so you and a friend can mow down wave after wave of enemies. The developers say there will be epic boss battles and lots of miniboss fights to test your skills. To break up the standard run and gun action there will be motorcycle and jetpack sequences. Suffice it to say, between the gameplay and the graphics, this game looks like a long lost cousin of Contra.
The story of Blazing Chrome is set in a future in which an intelligent AI is ruler of the planet. Per the game’s Steam page “Humans are expendable after an AI controlled robot army take over the world. They survive in hiding while their hunters rule the surface. When a small rebel group gets an intel about a big AI’s power plant, the machines strike their camp before they can organize an attack. A small group of rebels escape and go in a suicide mission to destroy this power plant. This suicide mission will result in heavy casualties and a ton of lock-and-load fast-paced action where scraping robots and blazing chrome with your powerful weapons is the only thing standing between you and your freedom.”
Initially you can choose to play as either Mavra or Doyle. Mavra is a super badass human resistance soldier. Doyle however is the equally groovy and deadly insurgent robot. The developers recently announced, via YouTube video, two secret hidden playable characters. Suhaila is a “a razor girl with a robotic arm”. The other character, Raijin, is a “deadly ninja”. Hopefully the new characters bring more than a simple sprite swap to the game.
Fans of old school run and gun games should keep an eye on Blazing Chrome. It looks set to deliver all the action you crave. Though, you should be aware that the developers have said there are only “5 apocalyptic environments” so the game may end up on the shorter side.
