As all things come to pass there will come a day when we are sitting around old, weary, reminiscing about the life we lived and why we still don’t have hoverboards. When our grandchildren gather around we’ll tell stories of the great clown age. Of how a simple and comfy game like Animal Crossing: New Horizons embodied the era.
When you take a step back and consider what is happening it almost plays out as a classical comedy commenting on the foolhardy nature of society. Where on the western front you have Nintendo of America dead set on signaling how virtuous they are. Inserting LGBT references in games aimed at children while making marketing deals with anti geek and overall terrible actress Brie Larson.
For we simply cannot just have a normal game release without it somehow pushing the progressive agenda or boosting the standing of those that have hijacked the industry. Yet then you turn eastward and to see a company that just wants a simple release of a normal game. Not just for profit, but to uplift people, keeping their spirits high, as covered in an interview on The Verge.
“We’ve been planning this release for quite some time, so it’s unfortunate that this timing overlapped with what’s currently happening in the world. I am very disheartened and saddened by the events happening across the world. Considering the timing, we hope that a lot of the Animal Crossing fans will use this as an escape, so they can enjoy themselves during this difficult time.” -New Horizons Producer Hisashi Nogami
Hopefully, sentiments like this will not be uncommon for long. That with the collapse of globalism and the loss of power of those that championed and pushed it we will have an industry that returns to working with consumers rather than exploiting them. Perhaps if such a day arrives we will become One Disgruntled Gamer or dare we imagine it: One Happy Gamer. Until then it is important to celebrate pro-consumer sentiments while fighting this culture war.
