VRChat Inc. is watching its Steam reviews go sideways, with players piling on over what reviewers describe as a refusal to label or filter generative AI content in worlds and assets.
Over the last 3 days, VRChat picked up 178 negative reviews against 79 positive ones, which works out to 69% negative – a sharp turn from the 29% negative rate it was holding in the weeks before.
The daily numbers pin down exactly when things broke, and it was October 28, when negative reviews jumped from 20 the day before to 53, outnumbering the 34 positive reviews posted that day.
It got worse on October 29, with 105 negative reviews landing against just 15 positive ones, the kind of ratio that usually means a community has stopped asking politely.
For context, most of October was quiet, with daily negatives typically sitting somewhere in the teens or low twenties while positives comfortably outpaced them, even through the Spookality event that kicked off on October 16.
The main complaint, according to reviews, centers on a community survey about generative AI, where reviewers say 95% of respondents asked for some kind of label or filter for AI-made content, and that VRChat then decided against adding either.
Many of these reviews come from people who have practically lived on the platform, including one reviewer with 3,071.3 hours and another with 3,794.7 hours, the latter of whom calls the decision a betrayal of the platform's community of creators.
One reviewer put the mood bluntly: "Early Access Review VRChat has decided not to disclose when a world is made with gen-ai, so into the garbage goes the whole game."
The second complaint is less about AI and more about process, with players saying it stings to be asked for feedback, give a near-unanimous answer, and then see that answer passed over.
A survey is only as good as what happens after it.
The third complaint hits the wallet, as one reviewer says they cancelled their VRC+ subscription and recommends others do the same, while another recommends avoiding VRC+ until the platform's content issues are sorted out.
As for VRChat Inc., its official Steam posts have not addressed the AI labeling decision at all – the October 28 post announced Release 2026.4.1, a non-network-compatible patch introducing a Safety Center, improved face tracking and a new login flow.
The timing of that patch lines up with the first day of the review wave, but the reviews themselves are focused on the AI policy rather than anything in the update's patch notes.
If you were hoping for a statement on Steam explaining the call, there isn't one yet, and the players leaving these reviews say what they want is a label or a filter that reflects the 95% they claim spoke up.
