Compulsion Games creative director David Sears acknowledged that he would never have funded South of Midnight himself due to severe commercial risks. The developer admitted that the upcoming action-adventure title was far too expensive an auteur project to reliably recoup costs on standard market returns.
Sears explained that South of Midnight only survived because Microsoft was handing out development cash freely across its studio network during aggressive expansion years. Without Xbox executives signing off on massive budgets regardless of immediate profit guarantees, the stylized project would never have entered production.
If you have watched Microsoft shut down creative studios over the past year, Sears' candid comments highlight a lavish spending era that has vanished. South of Midnight is currently scheduled to launch on PC and Xbox Series X|S with a day-one arrival on Game Pass.
