Sony released its latest quarterly financial earnings report, revealing lifetime PlayStation 5 console shipments reached 97.9 million units worldwide. The hardware maker pushed 2.6 million consoles between July and September, dropping 1.5 million units compared to the same timeframe last year.
While hardware velocity cooled down as the generation matured, PlayStation Network engagement climbed to 127 million active users after adding eight million players year-over-year. Overall game sales also gained ground, moving 88.2 million software copies compared to 80 million copies shifted during the previous year's quarter.
Physical media proved surprisingly resilient despite digital storefront dominance, making up 22 percent of total game purchases as players refused to abandon disc drives entirely. Expect Sony to lean heavily into aggressive holiday pricing to shove the console across the 100 million threshold before the current fiscal year wraps up.
