Cyberpunk Creator Mike Pondsmith Details Grim Chicago Setting For Sequel

Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith continues to actively collaborate with CD Projekt RED on expanding the franchise across video games and tabletop media. Unlike Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski's historically distant stance, Pondsmith maintains tight creative oversight over the entire canonical universe.

Pondsmith revealed that he spent hours consulting with environmental artists on the upcoming sequel's primary new metropolis, described as Chicago gone down a dark path. The new setting promises to look significantly grimmer than Night City while exploring heavy social themes and severe dehumanization.

The creator also keeps a firm grip on pivotal tabletop icons, noting CDPR cannot simply insert legendary solo Morgan Blackhand without his direct authorization. Meanwhile, a massive Cyberpunk Red tabletop expansion titled Cyberpunk: Infinite is launching soon to officially merge CDPR's 2077 timeline into the pen-and-paper universe.

CD Projekt RED's Boston studio is currently developing the Cyberpunk sequel under code name Project Orion across PC and modern consoles.
